Ihated making this drive but I loved being able to see my pops. He didn’t deserve to be locked in this hell hole. I don’t care what the state said he did. It wasn’t the same without him home but I was hoping this ten year bid flew by so we could all be together again.

“Who are you over there texting?” My mom asked, stealing glances at me in the passenger seat.

“Maddy.”

“Maddy? What happened to Kelli?”

“She’s still around getting on my nerves.”

“What are you doing to piss her off?” My mom asked.

“I’m not doing anything, she’s just crazy.”

“Women don’t get mad for nothing. Let me teach you something about women. If they’re mad it’s one of three things that can solve it. Food, attention, and sex. Since yo ass ain’t bringing no baby’s in my house I suggest you give her some attention.”

“I do but she’s always complaining.”

“Probably because you’re sitting over there texting another girl.”

“It’s not like that with Maddy. That’s the homie.”

“You know how stupid that shit sounds? You went over there to fuck that girl and now she’s your homie?”

“Yea, Maddy needs a friend so I became one.”

“You’re just like your father,” She smiled shaking her head as she focused on this never ending road.

“What you mean?”

“You have a big heart. Be careful with that, a lot of people will try to take advantage of you for that reason. Don’t expect to get what you give. Not everyone has a heart like you.”

“I’m just trying to look out for her.”

“Why the fuck is that your job?” She asked and I really didn’t have an answer. It wasn’t my job, but I felt for her and Maddy was good people.

I understood her plight. People often expected me to be just like my father and follow in his footsteps. I wasn’t opposed to it honestly but the idea that that’s all I ever was going to be was annoying. Still I played into the stereotype a lot like Maddy did with the rumors at school. My mom wasn’t the most understanding so I never tried to explain that to her, instead I kept it bottled inside. Since that’s what they expected of me that’s what I was going to do, be the biggest goddamn kingpin to come out of McEachin.

“I didn’t say it was.”

“Then stop fuckin acting like it. I swear you are your father’s child. Always feeling bad for people. I’m telling you now be careful, there’s going to be some woman that see’s that in you and takes advantage.”

“You don’t have to worry about me trying to save these hoes.”

“I hope not. I raised you better than that,” she smiled.

We finally arrived at the prison, after driving three hours. It took forever for us to get searched before they finally brought my pops in the room and I couldn’t help but smile. He didn’t like us coming up here often but I looked forward to our visits once a month.

“Hey son, how have you been?” He asked taking a seat at the table.
